This new touring production features direction by Jack O’Brien, who previously helmed the 2015–2016 North American tour of The Sound of Music. O’Brien described his approach: “We felt as if we were awakening Sleeping Beauty herself, and the results exposed a version of this classic virtually unknown before, and yet more dramatic, more detailed, more rapturous, and more touching than any we had experienced.”
The production features choreography by Danny Mefford, music supervision by Andy Einhorn, scenic design by Douglas Schmidt, costume design by Jane Greenwood, and lighting design by Natasha Katz. The tour is produced by Concord Theatricals and NETworks Presentations.
The Sound of Music tells the inspiring true story of Maria Rainer, a spirited young woman who leaves the abbey where she is a postulant to become governess to the seven children of widowed naval Captain Georg von Trapp in 1930s Austria. Through her warmth and love of music, Maria transforms the strict household, wins the hearts of the children, and eventually captures the Captain’s heart. As the Nazi party rises to power, the family must make a daring escape over the Alps to freedom.
Based on Maria Augusta Trapp’s 1949 memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, the musical dramatizes how music became the family’s salvation and path to a new life in America, where the real von Trapps became a successful touring singing group.
The score by Richard Rodgers (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II (lyrics) features some of the most recognizable songs in musical theater history:
